Asking Feels Different This Time

I have helped raise resources before. This is different.

August 2026 | JRX Academy Beta Year

2026–2027 Beta Year

6–8 minutes read

Friends,

I have asked people to support important work before.

For more than two decades, I have worked alongside young people, families, educators, organizations, and communities. Along the way, I have helped build partnerships, develop programs, bring people together, and raise resources for work I believed mattered.

This time feels different.

This time, I am asking people to help build something I founded.

JRX Academy.

That makes the ask more personal.

When you ask someone to invest in something you founded, you are asking them to trust more than the idea.

You are asking them to trust your judgment.

Your planning.

Your stewardship.

Your willingness to learn.

And your ability to turn a vision into something real.

I take that responsibility seriously.

I Believe JRX Is Worth Building

I believe young people deserve an education that is academically strong while also being deeply human.

An education that knows the learner. An education with enough structure to create clarity and enough flexibility to fit the student. An education where the Core 4—ELA, Math, Science, and Social Studies—remain foundational while students also have opportunities to create, move, lead, serve, explore interests, build relationships, and experience the world around them.

I believe technology can help us personalize learning and operate more efficiently. I believe communities contain extraordinary people, places, knowledge, and opportunities that can become part of a student's education. And I believe families can experience greater ease when they have a trusted learning community helping coordinate those pieces around their child.

These are ideas I believe in deeply.

Now comes the responsibility to test them.

Believe → Test → Observe → Learn → Demonstrate

That is why we are beginning with a Beta Year.

We have seven students across three families.

Starting here gives us the opportunity to pay attention.

To strengthen academics.

To develop Quests.

To build relationships.

To test systems.

To listen to families.

To document what happens.

And to improve before we grow.

Our approach is simple:

Prove before we scale.

Building JRX Requires Resources

There is another part of this story that deserves the same clarity.

I am raising money to build JRX Academy.

The work requires resources.

We are developing strong Core 4 academic systems.

We are creating signature Quests in Arts, Leadership, Law, Athletics, and Hospitality while increasing the quality and quantity of learning experiences available to students.

We are building technology and systems that can make personalization more efficient.

We want to recruit and prepare Academic Specialists and Success Specialists.

We want to develop a strong roster of Good Souls Mentors.

We want to connect students with professionals, businesses, organizations, coaches, artists, educators, and community leaders.

We want to create opportunities beyond a single classroom or campus.

All of that requires thoughtful investment.

And part of becoming the founder JRX needs me to become is learning to make that invitation clearly.

Conscious Fundraising

I want the way we raise resources to reflect the kind of institution we are trying to build.

For me, that begins with transparency.

Tell people where we are.

Explain what we're building.

Share what resources can make possible.

Ask clearly.

Respect people's choices.

Steward what is entrusted to us.

Show what happened.

Learn from it.

Invite people forward.

That is the foundation of what I am calling Conscious Fundraising.

I believe JRX Academy is worth building, and I am inviting you to help us build it.

How you participate is your decision.

Because money matters, but money is only one thing a community can contribute.

Different Capital. Same Build.

Someone may contribute financially.

Someone may know an extraordinary Academic Specialist.

Someone may become a Good Souls Mentor.

An attorney may help us develop a Law Quest.

An artist may create an Arts experience.

A coach may strengthen Athletics.

A chef or restaurant may open an opportunity through Hospitality.

A business may welcome students into a real workplace.

Someone may have access to a space we can use.

Someone may introduce us to a future partner.

Someone may gather eight people around their dining-room table for a Building JRX Dinner.

And someone reading this letter may simply know the person we need to meet next.

That matters.

JRX will be built through multiple forms of capital:

Financial capital.

Human capital.

Social capital.

Intellectual capital.

Physical capital.

Institutional capital.

Different people can bring different resources to the table.

Different contribution. Different capital. Same build.

What We Owe the People Who Build With Us

If you contribute something valuable to JRX, we have a responsibility to steward it thoughtfully.

Our developing commitment is:

Contribute → Steward → Build → Learn → Show → Invite Forward

You contribute.

We steward.

We build.

We pay attention.

We learn.

We show you what happened.

Then we invite you to see what comes next.

Some things we test during the Beta Year will work exceptionally well. Others will need refinement. Some ideas may lead us somewhere we did not anticipate.

That is part of building deliberately.

I want these Funder's Letters to become a record of that process. Not simply what we hoped would happen. What actually happened. What worked. What changed. What students and families taught us. What your contributions helped make possible. And what we believe should happen next.

Building Beyond the Founder

Today, I am deeply involved in the operation of JRX Academy.

That makes sense at this stage.

But the long-term strength of JRX cannot depend on how many responsibilities I can personally hold. We need to build capacity around the institution just as intentionally as we build support around students.

That means developing:

people

systems

specialists

mentors

Quest Leaders

partners

technology

revenue

leadership

community

Over time, the “we” should become much larger.

That is one of the reasons I am writing to you.

I'm Asking You to Build With Us

If something in these first two letters connects with you, I invite you to participate.

You can give.

You can mentor.

You can teach.

You can connect.

You can host.

You can share.

And you can ask questions that help us think more deeply about what we are building.

Perhaps you already know which of those fits you.

Perhaps you simply want to keep reading for a while.

Both are welcome.

These letters are an invitation to watch JRX develop from the beginning.

Today:

Seven students.

Three families.

One Beta Year.

And a growing circle of people helping us discover what JRX Academy can become.

I have helped raise resources before.

This time feels different because I am inviting people into something I am personally responsible for building.

So I will keep doing my best to make the invitation clear.

I believe JRX Academy is worth building.

I invite you to build it with us.
