Parent Council

Families as Partners

Families are essential partners in the JRX Academy experience.

Parent Council creates a structured way for families to contribute ideas, raise concerns, strengthen community, support school life, and participate in selected areas of institutional decision-making.

The goal is meaningful participation with clear boundaries.

Family voice should be meaningful without requiring families to run the school.

Parent Council is not intended to replace:

  • professional educational judgment
  • safeguarding responsibilities
  • executive management
  • student governance
  • employment authority
  • confidential student or personnel processes
  • formal legal or regulatory responsibilities

What Parent Council May Support

Depending on the authority formally delegated to it, Parent Council may contribute to areas such as:

  • family experience
  • volunteer coordination
  • events
  • community-building
  • family communication feedback
  • selected school-life initiatives
  • family engagement
  • recommendations to leadership
  • selected logistics
  • intergenerational activities
  • community contribution

Recommendations Should Go Somewhere

Parent Council should not exist simply to hold conversations.

When the Council makes a formal recommendation, the recommendation should be routed to the person or body with authority to act on it.

The appropriate decision-maker should respond within a reasonable period with a disposition such as:

  • Accepted
  • Accepted With Modifications
  • Declined
  • Under Further Review

Where appropriate, the response should include the reason and next step.

Participation Does Not Equal Ownership

Tuition payments, donations, volunteer hours, longevity, popularity, or level of involvement do not purchase additional institutional authority.

Likewise, families who experience legitimate barriers to volunteer participation should not automatically lose dignity, belonging, or access to appropriate family voice.

Governance authority comes from the role and charter, not from wealth or social influence.

Parent Council and Student Voice

Parent Council should complement rather than replace student governance.

Students may legitimately hold authority in areas where parents do not. Parents may legitimately hold authority or consultation rights in other areas.

When students, families, educators, or leaders disagree, JRX should use the appropriate governance and review process rather than assuming one group automatically controls every decision.

Accountability

Parent Council members remain subject to:

  • confidentiality requirements
  • conflict-of-interest rules
  • appropriate conduct expectations
  • safeguarding boundaries
  • eligibility requirements
  • term limits or rotation
  • the authority defined by this charter

Council membership is temporary stewardship. It is not personal possession.

The full charter lives in the Family Portal
