Section 1
Identity — Who Am I?
Identity is your starting point.
But identity is larger than your name, age, appearance, family, or where you come from. Those things can be part of your story. They are not the whole story.
Identity also includes:
- your interests
- your experiences
- your gifts
- your strengths
- your challenges
- your culture
- your personality
- your skills
- your preferences
- your responsibilities
- your stories
- and the person you are becoming
Some parts of yourself will be easy to recognize. Other parts will take time. That is part of the journey.
Ask Yourself
- What brings my eyes alive?
- What do I enjoy doing even when nobody tells me to do it?
- What am I curious about?
- What am I becoming good at?
- What do people trust me to do?
- What comes naturally to me?
- What requires more practice?
- What experiences have shaped me?
- What am I proud of?
- What would I like to understand better about myself?
- What parts of myself am I still discovering?
Identity Is Not a Cage
People will sometimes describe you. Smart. Quiet. Athletic. Creative. Difficult. Funny. Shy. Talented. Lazy. Leader. Follower. Good student. Bad student.
Those descriptions may contain information. They do not get to become your prison.
Is this something I know about myself, or something someone else decided about me?
- You are allowed to grow beyond an old description.
- You are allowed to discover a gift late.
- You are allowed to become better at something.
- You are allowed to change your mind.
- You are allowed to surprise yourself.
Identity is discovered and developed.
Identity Quest
Finish these statements.
- I am someone who...
- I care about...
- I am curious about...
- I am learning...
- I am becoming...
- People can count on me to...
Then choose one answer you want to explore more deeply. That may become a Quest.
